About Joe Galuski
Joe Galuski's been working behind a radio microphone for a LONG TIME!!! In the business since 1975, and here at 570-WSYR for 20 years and counting!!! Can he keep it up folks? In fact, he's worked at all times of the day at the Mighty 570 anytime from 5 in the morning up to 7 at night. But it wasn't until 1998 that he found his favorite time of day to be at the controls..as the host of Central New York's Morning News..Monday through Friday from 5-9am and Saturday 6-8am.

A Syracuse native, and a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy here in Syracuse, JG went on to develop an interest in broadcasting at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he earned a degree in communications. After radio jobs in two great cities...Baltimore, Maryland, and Buffalo, New York, it was back home to Syracuse and 570-WSYR in 1987, and they haven't thrown him out yet!!!

He's managed to survive the long, cold winters of Central New York by co-hosting pre-game shows on WSYR for Syracuse University football and basketball games, plus sharing his vast knowledge of  the hoop game as a  basketball coach at Manlius-Pebble Hill High School right here in Central New York.

Joe also is supported by a great family, a wife who teaches middle-school locally, and three kids...2 daughters already out the door earning a living, and a son in his Freshman year at the State University at Buffalo.

Joe also gets some terrific support in the morning from some very talented people. Chris Weidman at the news desk, meteorologist Pat Pagano, a 25 year PLUS veteran on WSYR with the weather forecasts, Kathy Denman on traffic, andd the up-to-date sports scores with Bob McElligot. Add on a lot of interesting and entertaining features, it's four hours you won't want to miss!!!

Check in everyday!!! Central New York's Morning News with Joe Galuski.

Time for Football..Let's strap 'em on!!!!

Doesn't it seem like yesterday we were lamenting the loss by the SU basketball team to UMass in the NIT? Just yesterday...............

Well, SU football is back!!! And for another season, Newsradio 570-WSYR  is back with the best pre-game and post-game coverage of the Orange. It all starts this Saturday as the footballers open the season against the Northwestern Wildcats out of the Big Ten.

Join Jim Lerch and me for the Time-Warner Game Day Kickoff two hours before Saturday's game. And if you'd like to see how the "pros" pull it off, we'll be on the air from the New York State Fair at the Time Warner Building at the fairgrounds. It right inside the main gate. See you there!!!

After the game, it's another season of your calls on the Romano Dealers Wrap-Up Show.

The World's Next Great Food Fight.................

Yesterday, they painted the town red in the world's biggest food fight: the annual and most epic "Tomatina Tomato Fight."

Some 40-thousand crazed party people get together every year, firing red missiles at one another, hitting arms, thighs, chests and heads. Some wear swimming goggles and diving masks while many houses were covered in tarps. This year, lots of people wore hats made of carved out watermelons.

Local cops tried to ban the Tomatina, but it's become such a success that the town more than makes back the $140-thousand it spends to finance the event and competitors come from as far as Australia, The US and the USSR.

Photos of the aftermath.

So..where's the next great food fight?

I found it. It's called "Clean Monday," a festival that's anything but, meant to go along with the beginning of Lent each year in the Greek seaside town of Galaxidi.

Known as the Flour Wars of Galaxidi, locals prepare by dying bags of flour tainted with food coloring, then they paint their faces with charcoal. They cover historical buildings with plastic tarps and crazies bust out goggles to protect their eyes from the flying starch.

Pics from the last February bash........

Hello from Charlotte!!!
Tuesday 08-19-2008 3:21pm ET
It's a pretty long drive...740 miles...about 13 hours, and as you would expect, a lot of summer road construction, especially thru Pennsylvania. Doesn't it seem that no matter how much road work that state does, the highways always suck?

But the long road trip, potholes and high gas prices..although gas prices are about 25 to 30 cents lower once you get out of NYS...was worth it to see our new grandson Colin Michael. He checked in at 8 lbs. 10 oz. on 8/08/08 and is doing great.

Charlotte is a terrific town. I've been here a couple times before, including a trip here last fall for NASCAR. The city is expanding by the day..traffic is pretty busy. If anything, the infrastructure is somewhat outdated to handle the volume, and they're trying to make it more tolerable through makeshift, temporary solutions.

I've never seen so many building cranes in a downtown area. Construction is booming. New office buildings, strip malls..you name it, they're building it down here. The people are friendly, the customer service people in the stores are polite and helpful, and the radio down here is pretty good. The radio equivalent of WSYR, WBT 1110 is a good sounding station, with lots of great information and compelling talk.

Pro sports...Carolina Panthers....Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA, and a lot of culture make it a pretty neat town. Okay, so what's an occasional hurricane to deal with? Although, this area is rarely in the direct path of those things.

I will be back Monday however. Wouldn't miss it for the world.
Olympic Update

So, have you seen that photo of the Spanish basketball team?

The players have their fingers on the sides of their faces and it looks like they're slanting their eyes, as in the way people used to imitate Chinese and Japanese people.

The twist: It's a photo to promote the team's sponsor, Li-Ning Footwear, a Chinese company. Li-Ning footwear is founded by Li Ling, the final torch bearer in opening ceremonies. Ouch.

What happened when the inevitable controversy hit? The team is defending themselves with a predictable, "the ad was in poor taste...we apologize."

The Impossible Question/The Olympics

Here's this week's "IQ"............................

Women say this is the #1 gift they never want to get as a gift from their husbands. What is it?

The answer is.........................

Here's last week's "IQ" with the answer.................

These used to be common, but now only 1 in 4 teenagers have one of these. What is it?

The answer is............A WATCH!!!!!!!!

The Olympics

You've probably heard about the weird street food people in Beijing eat, like live scorpions and seahorses and cicadas and tofu that wouldn't past the smell test at your place.....probably..I've never been to your place however.

Photo galleries are popping up all over the web:

The scorpions go for $2, making it one of the more expensive snacks. What's it like to eat them? From those who've tried it, it's a little like eating a french fry...."Crunchy on the outside....soft in the middle.

While the street food is available all over Beijing, the Wangfujing Night Market is a popular place to find it. It's a huge shopping district in Beijing and features a long line of sellers with their "eats."

The Wangfujing is so popular that it has exit and entrance guards and a roped off path that you shuffle along like one of those lame DisneyWorld rides. Much of what the market serves is available elsewhere in Beijing for much less.

My New Look
Friday 08-08-2008 7:21pm ET

I got a gift today from Jay Fishman, who talks to me every morning about politics, and writes about it in his blog too, The Fishman File.

Jay spent about six months traveling around the Middle East, and that's where he bought me this fancy Yasser Arafat "headdress."

He says in Arabic it's called an "Igal."

Maybe you'll see me wearing it tomorrow morning from 6 to 8 at Oneida Shores for our Roadshow at the ESPN Bassmasters Tournament.  Make sure you come out and say hi to the whole gang.

I'm a Pretty Simple Man.................

................and when it comes to our National Anthem, a song that honors this great country, it should be performed with the utmost respect and not a lot of "artistic freedom." Let's just totally eliminate Roseanne Barr's performance at a major league baseball game years ago. Case in point:

I can't believe it's Monday again!!! Urghh!

These used to be common, but now only 1 in 4 teenagers own one of these. What are they?

The answer is............................

Here's last weeks' "IQ" with the answer, (just in case you couldn't figure it out).....................

At work this happens to the average person at least 5 times a week? What is it?

The answer is....................YOUR COMPUTER FREEZES UP !!!!!!!!

Filling a Need............................

Ya know, it might be a little easier for you to wake up in the morning if your alarm clock smelled like bacon. Wired magazine found just such a clock. It's the Wake 'N bacon clock that promises to help you "rise and shine with the delicious aroma of melting pig fat thru your nostrils!!!"

Just drop some frozen bacon inside the clock when you go to bed and set the alarm. Wake 'N Bacon will start cooking up your morning treat!!!

Catch a glimpse here, and invite me over for breakfast if it turns out to be pretty tasty!!!
